The Glowstick Poi Twirling techniques and measurements i use are based on over twenty years of practicing with twisters, and poi twirling Poi is an ancient art of Twirling balls used by the Maori people of New Zealand Over the years these have been modified, now a days even though people still use balls they also use a wick that is dipped in fuel and set alight connected to either Chain or Wire More people are now starting to use Glowstick as a very safe alternative or until they feel confident enough to use Fire through practicing. I used these for nine years before using Fire Twisters.
Normally poi is looped around the wrist with the cord held between the thumb-index finger, or the index-middle finger. Many Twister moves are similar to poi moves which consist of figure of 8’s and circles Twirled around the body in many different positions and combinations.
Problems with using them Hitting yourself with them, only a lot practice will help with this. Grace and beauty before power and speed. Friction burns and indentation marks: these are caused by the cord rubbing between your fingers and holding the cord to hard. As you practice these areas will harden, or alternatively use Half of a Twister as a handle and hold like a Twister. when you do get blisters my advice for the treatment is don't burst them because it becomes an open wound for infection. leave until the fluid goes back into your body (min of 2 days) and if the skin looks to damaged to heal back on to your body. use a small clean needle and make a few holes put some antiseptic cream on and leave for a day with out a dressing. then put some more holes in the skin more antiseptic cream, leave 4/5 days without anything if the skin hasn't come off after this you should be able to peel it off, like peeling skin after sun burn. and underneath there will be new skin, sensitive but not as bad as it could be.
This is my design for making Glowstick poi which i have used for 20 years. 1. two pieces of plastic tubing. 1 length 5 inches long the other 3 inches both 3/4 inch in diameter. 2. in the 5 inch one drill a 12 mm hole through the tubing half way down the shaft. this will be used as the handle. Then the 3 inch tube need’s to be drilled on the end as described on for twisters, this will be the Glowstick holder. Next you need to connect the cord to the tubing as described in How to make then push the cord through both the 12 mm holes in the handle then tie a few knots in the cord, then wrap some tape around the cord by the 12 mm hole you pushed the cord through, this will help with friction burns between your fingers. For fitting the Glowstick you will probably need to wrap some clear tape round the wide end of the Glowstick so when it is fitted into the end of the tubing it is a tight fit. push the Glowstick in about a third of an inch, wrap some more tape to secure. to make heavier wrap more tape around the tubing or do what do push either some window putty, Plasticine, or play-do in the end and compress it doesn’t take much to make them heavier just a couple of ounces.
